Bulldogs are one of those breeds that don't get to go on long walks or get enough exercise on the type of surface that usually help in keeping nail lengths down. For this reason, it is up to the owner to keep the nails at the proper level.

You should do everything possible to keep the nails at their proper length. Each nail has a blood vessel running through the center referred to as the "quick."  The quick contains sensitive nerve endings which grow close to the end of the nail. If this quick it cut this will result in severe pain to the dog and can even result in large amounts of bleeding from the nail.

The nails can be trimmed and/or maintained using a coarse file (made for expressly for dogs), canine nail clippers, or an electric nail grinder. Each method will get the job done, it's really up to you which method you decide to use. Regardless of method you decide to use, you should always refer to the included instructions for that product before using.

It's highly suggested that you start your nail trimming process  as soon as you bring your puppy home. Even if the nails don't need to be trimmed, you should go through the process so your Bulldog will get use to the process of their feet being touched. If you decide to use the electric nail grinder, you will almost be required to start this process at an early age as the grinder will sound much like a dentist drill.

While attending to your bulldogs nails, this is a prefect time to inspect the rest of the foot. Inspect the foot for cracked pads, swollen or tender areas. Check between the toes for redness or cysts.
