Hypoplastic (narrow) Trachea is the abnormal growth of the rings of cartilage that make up the trachea, resulting in a narrowed airway. Dogs with no abnormality other than a mild to moderately narrowed trachea may have no clinical problems; however hypoplastic trachea is frequently seen as one element of brachycephalic syndrome. Affected dogs have varying degrees of obstruction to their airways, which causes signs ranging from noisy breathing to collapse.

Hypoplastic trachea is a congenital condition, meaning the dog is born with it. Problems will usually start to show up by 5 or 6 months of age. Some of the typical signs you may see include noisy or laboured breathing, moist cough, fever, or lethargy.

In the most basic terms, Hypoplastic Trachea is an under developed trachea which limits the amount of air the dog can take in at a given time. Although there is no cure for this problem, you should have your dog checked out.

It's important to keep your dog at a healthy weight. Respiratory difficulties will be worse for overweight dogs.

I lost my first bulldog (Lord Ferris) to complications related to having a Hypoplastic Trachea.
