It's not uncommon for dogs to get stung by a bee or
wasp. It's even more common for Bulldogs than most other dogs due to the lack
(or under size) of a snout. Due to the size of the snout Bulldogs tend to push
their entire head and face into whatever they want to smell. This process can
disturb a bee or wasp nest very quickly resulting in your bulldog being stung.
Bee and Wasp stings can be painful to a dog and very frightening to you and your
dog. The following suggestions will help both you and your bully overcome a
sting:
A single sting usually doesn't present any serious problems however if stung in the head, mouth or around the head watch your bully carefully to make sure any swelling does not interfere with breathing or swallowing. If swelling increases dramatically a few minutes after the sting seek medical help immediately!
Multiple stings can cause more damage and even be life-threatening. If your dog is stung multiple times you should seek medical help immediately. In your dog's first aid kit you should have antihistamine given to you by your veterinarian along with instructions on proper dosage. Administer the antihistamine as soon as possible (based on your veterinarian's directions) and take your dog to the closest veterinarian. It's not uncommon for dogs with multiple stings to be treated with intravenous catheterization, the administration of fluids, given corticosteroids and monitored vital signs. The main goal of treatment is to prevent shock, minimize damage to the major organs (including circulatory system).
